NHEICC
launched the website under the title www.nheicc.gov.np
NHEICC has
launched the website under the title "www.nheicc.gov.np" with the financial
support of WHO and technical support of local consultants. The main
objective of this website is to disseminate the activities of HELLIS Nepal
to its participants libraries and member countries. It also includes the
brief information of participant libraries, linkage to member countries, and
linkage to most popular health related organizations. Ministry of Health is
the parent's body so users could get the information about the misty of
Health, Department of Health Services and it's different division and their
publication list, Apart from these services the user could get the
information on union list of health science periodicals, documents on
nursing, health related documents published from different INGO's and NGO's
and IEC materials developed from NHEICC etc.
NHEICC
becomes the member HINARI ( Health Internet work Access to Research
Initiative).
HINARI project is team effort of WHO and 6 biggest biomedical publishers
as Blackwell, Levier science, The Harcourt Worldwide STM Group, Walters
Lower International Health & Science, Springer Vela and John Wiley. The
secretary General of the United Nations launched it in September 2000 under
the leadership of the World Health Organization. The core elements of this
project are content, Internet connectivity and capacity building. HINARI has
brought public and private part under the principles of ensuring equitable
access to health information. It created the environment to bridge the
digital divide in health ensuring that relevant information and technologies
to deliver it are widely available and effectively; professional,
researcher, scientist and policy maker. It provides to access the full text
of medical journal around 2000 titles. There are constrain like most of the
publishers used to provide to access the full text of articles from 1996 or
1995 on-wards only.
This service
would be great support to the health personnel, health researcher as well as
health planner to get the full text of articles. This will help to
strengthen the preventive and curative health services which leads to the
healthy lifestyles and health society.
Currently the
health personnel are getting benefit from this service and the users would
be most in future. Marketing of available HINARI services are going on.
Training
on tips of techniques to access the health information from Internet.
A training on how to access the health information from Internet was
organized at Mechi Zonal Hospital; Western Regional Hospital; Lumbini Zonal
Hospital; Narayani Sub-regional Hospital, B.P.K Memorial Cancer Hospital and
Manipal Medical College which helped the health personnel to access the
health information at their won location.
Workshop
on library Science for Junior Librarians:
National Health Education Information and Communication Center, DHS, MOH
in co-operation with the World Health Organization, organized a 10 days
workshop on basic library science for junior librarians from 31 July 1994-9
ague. 1994. The workshop was organized with specific objective to strengthen
the HELLIS activity of NHEICC so as to support other health institution's
libraries and relevant users. Mr. Uttam Ratna Shakya designed the course
contents of workshop and served as Course Co-ordinator through out the
program.
Library
Management:

Computerization of books and periodicals were completed using the software
(a) Books management system (BMS) for books (b) Periodical management
system (PMS) for record the periodicals develop from WHO/SEARO
-
Compilation and publication of Union List of Health Science Periodicals
with the coverage from 1966-1992 and 1981-1997 were completed.
CD/ROM
Medline Search services:
HELLIS Library has started CD/ROM Medline literature search service from
23 Feb. 1997 onwards. This service is getting popular among the health
personnel for retrieving the health literature from the preparation of paper
presentation as well as thesis preparation. HELLIS Library has the
collection of CD/ROM Medline (Silver platter) from 1966 to date. In as
average 50 users/month are benefiting from this service.
INTERNET Facility and E-Mail Service:
HELLIS Library facilitates to access the INTERNET, and information
highway, through Mercantile Office System from July 1997 onwards. Health
personnel could benefit from this service to retrieve the latest health
information. We are providing the Internet access facility to health
personnel free of cost as a trail basis to monitor the interest to health
personnel in retrieving the health information from September 1999 onwards.
Survey of
Zonal Hospitals:
Survey on existing library facilities of 10 zonal Hospitals has been
completed in 1997 with WHO financial support. This survey was conducted to
strengthen the HELLIS network activities nation wide and to make it
responsible to expand its activities upto zonal hospital level. Survey
report also revealed the importance of HELLIS network in Nepal.
Current
awareness Services:

Circulation of Content pages of medical journals to the participant
libraries and zonal hospitals was started from April 1998 to December 1998
for the maximum utilization of medical journals and to provide current
awareness services to health personnel.
- List of
subscribed medical journals was circulated to all participant libraries
and zonal hospitals for their information to inspire the use of available
journals at HELLIS Focal Point Library.
Submission
of Draft Proposal on Establishment of Central Health Science Information &
Documentation Centre.
- Library
Consultant Mr. Shakya had submitted a " Draft Proposal on Establishment of
Central Health Science Information & Documentation Centre" to NHEICC which
was circulated to Secretary, Ministry of Health: Director General,
Department of Health Services, Ministry of Health: WHO and librarians of
different Institute for their valuable suggestions.
- In order
to support Establishment of Central Health Science Information &
-Documentation Centre, NHEICC had organized 3 days national workshop from
17-19 August 1998 and renamed as National Health Information &
Documentation.
- Ministry
of Health had allocated 2 Ropani of land, within the Ministry of Health
complex, for the construction of building.
- NHEICC had
proposed to establish HELLIS network center as a separate wing of its in
new organogram submitted to Ministry of Health.
