Drugs Act was promulgated for the first time in Nepal in 2035 BS (1978 AD) with the objective of controlling production, distribution, sale and export-import of drug and of making available safe, quality and efficacious drugs to the general public. There are 40 (forty Sections) in the Act. These sections are arranged into seven chapters and all sections have been fully implemented in the country. His Majesty's Government of Nepal established a Department of Drug Administration (DDA) in 1st Kartik, 2036 BS (16th Oct 1979 AD) for the purpose of carrying out the objectives of the Drug Act 1978. Drug Act was amendment in 2045 (1988) and 2057 (2000) for the first and second time respectively. Similarly, National drug Policy 1995 ahs been promulgated in 1995 by His Majesty's Government of Nepal for to maintain, safeguard and promote the health of people by making the country self-reliant in drug production; ensuring the availability of safe, effective, standard and quality drugs at the affordable price in quantities sufficient to cover every corner of the country; and to manage effectively all the drug related activities including production import, export, storage, sale and distribution, It will contribute to the effective implementation of Drug Act 1978.
To
prohibit the misuse of abuse of drugs and allied pharmaceutical
materials as well as the false or misleading information relation
to efficacy and used of drugs and to regulate and control the production,
marketing, distribution, export-import, storage and utilization
of those drugs which are not safe for the use, efficacious and of
standard quality.
